How to effortlessly understand your emotions and master them?

At present when robots are becoming more and more advance and realistic, what’s the one most important trait that we have and robots don’t? Correct! Emotions. We need emotions to connect with other emotional human beings, animals, or things for that matter. To feel everything oh-so deeply that it triggers our indulgence is what makes us feel alive.

Importance of Emotional Depth:

In this commercialized world, we have started losing ourselves. We do have emotions, that’s for sure. We simply don’t have any control over them. Mood swings are the new normal. Good days and bad days are the things we experience almost regularly. Little do we care about controlling our emotions and not letting our emotions control us. The depth of our emotions determines who we are and the control over them decides who we become.

Getting started:

Starting with the basics, let’s focus on emotions. During the 1970s, psychologist Paul Eckman identified six basic emotions that he suggested were universally experienced in all human cultures. The emotions he identified were happiness, sadness, disgust, fear, surprise, and anger. He later expanded his list of basic emotions to include such things as pride, shame, embarrassment, and excitement. Also, Not to forget the remaining 7 deadly sins other than pride, which include greed, envy, lust, wrath, sloth, and gluttony making control even more challenging.

You can only improve what you can measure. So, the first thing you’ll have to do is to measure your emotions and depth. Hence, it’s time to do the age-old yet very underrated thing. It’s time to introspect. Going inside and making a deeper connection with your very self to identify your areas of improvement.

Steps to measure your emotional depth:

  • Sit alone in a peaceful place
  • Write the above-mentioned emotions down
  • Start rating these emotions based on the intensity and frequency you feel them
  • Segregate those emotions according to positive and negative

That’s it. Now you have a list of emotions you’re good at also the emotions where you have a scope of improvement. This list can be broadly divided into two sections. One, where you need to decrease the intensity maybe say anger, fear, etc, and one, where you need to increase it e.g. happiness, excitement, etc. We’ll discuss decreasing the negative emotions in some other article as here, we’re focusing on the emotions we want to increase.

Finally, you’ve made it to a point where you know exactly what your emotional needs are.

“Who and what we surround ourselves with is who and what we become.”

Let’s break it down with a kindergarten level example. You’ve heard of songs, movies, and poetry. You watch or listen to them all the time. Ever wondered what impact it’s making on your personality? After watching a sad movie or listening to a sad song/poetry, you feel sad for some time. Your Aura starts becoming weak. And it’s the same with every emotion.

You are being spoonfed of the emotions they want you to have every day and night and stop you from having a mind of your own. The news these days only spread hatred and fear. Music has started losing its depth, like seriously? Wiggle? Blurred lines? Slowly, you start believing what you’re hearing is normal. Hatred is normal, anger is normal, materializing women is normal, judging men is normal, pedophilia is normal. Because now these things have set their roots deep in your mind. When the truth is, you weren’t born but programmed this way.

Even a lie starts looking like the truth when repeated for years. But, will that make it the truth? Would you ever have social beliefs if you were never introduced to them? Would the concept of loyalty, romance, chivalry, patriotism, religiousness, or discrimination exist in your mind if you were oblivious to their very existence?

Thank god, that you still have an eye for differentiating constructive from destructive. But the question is, how often do you use that?

There will never be a better time than now to start reshaping your thoughts and renewing your life. If only switching things that surround you can bring you out of grief and give you the life you not only want but, deserve. Then why not? Wasting the only life you’ve been given, feeling the way you don’t enjoy will be the last thing you would want to do. Wouldn’t it?
